After more than 50 years, the French film festival is the oldest and one of the most established film festivals in Hong Kong. This new edition is expected to be exceptional and one of the most ambitious to date.

With a selection of 35 long feature films (among them 26 have never been shown in Hong Kong before) and 20 short films, the French Cinepanorama aims at giving Hong Kong audiences the opportunity to discover the diversity and trends of contemporary French cinema. Comedy, action, romance, film noir, animation, documentaries or author films, this year’s selection should satisfy every tastes.

The main selection is composed of 18 films, released in France between the end of 2008 and 2009. On top of the French box office successes and surprises of 2009, 4 films will be premiered within the festival: the long awaited Don’t look back, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, A Prophet and Seraphine.

This year again, new French directors will be given a very special place. 8 films, awarded or selected in prestigious festivals, released in France between 2008 and 2009, will give us a glimpse of France upcoming and promising talents. Not to be missed: 2009 Cannes Festival Critics’ week grand prize winner Farewell Gary, 2009 San Sebastian Festival best first film winner The Day God Walked Away or public and critic acclaimed film The French Kissers.

Moreover, on the occasion of the gala premiere of A Prophet (2009 Cannes Festival Grand Jury Prize), a retrospective is dedicated to remarkable film director Jacques Audiard.

The work of Raymond Depardon, certainly one of the most prominent French documentary film maker today, will be highlighted through a series of 5 documentaries on contemporary French society, directed between 1984 and 2008.

Last but not least, 3 programmes of short films and animation will complete this year’s rich program.

To mark the closing of the festival, on Saturday 12 December, the Alliance française de Hong Kong together with the Groupama Gan Foundation and the Thompson Foundation for Film Heritage will organize a free outdoor screening of Jacques Tati’s classic Mr Hulot Holidays followed by a Tati Concert performed by Dj oof and Vj Elkouby who will revisit the soundtrack and the images of the film live!
