  During a ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention Center on the 7th of January 2010, the Consul general of France, conferred to Mrs Betty CHAN, the medal of Knight of la Légion d’Honneur, a distinction that has been given in 2009 to her husband, Mr. CHAN Kam-Ling , before he passed away in August 2009, after a long illness.

The first woman and the first Chinese to hold the second-highest governmental position in Hong Kong, Mrs Chan is being recognized for her distinguished career and her major contribution to the promotion of gender equality, freedom of press and democratic debate, values of universal significance.
